Ural federal university: Technological Applications of AI in Judicial Practice Will Be Developed at UrFU

A foresight session was held at the Ural Federal University to discuss the prospects for the introduction of modern information technologies, artificial intelligence technologies in legal activities, law enforcement practice.

The event was attended online by the head of the Sverdlovsk Regional Arbitration Court I. Reshetnikova, representatives of the Institute of State and Law of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Saratov State Law Academy, and Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (RUDN University).

Ural Federal University has accumulated significant competencies in the field of information technology, artificial intelligence. The legal community needs new knowledge, competencies – we are ready to transfer them.

Rector Victor Koksharov made a welcoming remark to the participants of the foresight session.

“We feel a request from the professional community to understand what Artificial Intelligence is. Lack of understanding of how artificial intelligence achieves results is one of the reasons for the low level of trust in modern artificial intelligence technologies and can become an obstacle to their development” – rector stressed.

The rector added that UrFU has all the technological solutions for the transfer of new competencies in the field of IT for lawyers.

“Today, AI is a complex of technological solutions that makes it possible to simulate human cognitive functions and obtain, when performing specific tasks, results comparable, at least, to the results of human intellectual activity. Such a complex includes information and communication infrastructure, software (including those that use machine learning methods), processes and services for data processing and finding solutions. We have all necessary assets here at UrFU’s Institute of Radioelectronics and Information Technologies” – emphasized Rector Koksharov.

In the near future, foresight session participants discussed creation of a robo-judge, based on AI, and advanced digital technologies implementation. The voiced requests will become the basis for the creation of joint educational programs, programs of additional education and advanced training. The universities participating in the Ural Interregional Research and Education Center of the world level have the necessary competencies for this. Thus, Ural Federal University and Ural State Law University are planning to launch joint programs on international law and international relations.

According to the participants in the session, the use of artificial intelligence is also useful for increasing the availability of legal services. The result will be the transformation of machine-readable law – the emergence of an opportunity for people with completely different competencies to simply implement the protection of their rights, to receive a legal assessment of activities without additional costs for legal services.

The requests and proposals of the representatives of the legal community following the results of the foresight session will be packed for study in the format of research and development by scientists from UrFU and Ural State Law University. A number of cases will form the basis for a student hackathon on artificial intelligence technologies in jurisprudence. Joint project teams of the two universities will take part in solving the problems.

The foresight session “Artificial Intelligence and Jurisprudence” was aimed at creating a dialogue platform for scientific discussion on the prospects for the development of artificial intelligence technologies, communication between information technology specialists and lawyers.
