Ural federal university: Ural Research Education Center Can Take Up to 20% of the Russian Express Implantation Market

Up to 20% of the Russian market of reconstructive surgery and implantation can be taken by the Ural Interregional Research and Education Center “Advanced Industrial Technologies and Materials”. Work in this area is carried out by employees of the Ural Federal University, Kurgan State University, the Kurgan Ilizarov Center and the “Sensor” enterprise.

The UIREC’s program plans to develop technologies for reconstructive surgery and express implantation of a high level of readiness in 2024 with an entry into the market in the period from 2025 to 2030. Achieving a 20% market share is planned to be achieved after 2035.

Head of the Department of Heat Treatment and Physics of Metals at the Ural Federal University Artemy Popov notes the role of UrFU in the project in the selection and creation of materials for use as implants for the production of final products using 3D modeling, additive and other types of technologies. In turn, the Ilizarov Center will design products.

“Our task is to make an implant and hand it over for installation,” says Artemy Popov. – That is, to provide those materials that the consumer needs in terms of shape, size, strength, biocompatibility, and other parameters. This is a very promising market. In Russia and in the world, the demand for this kind of surgery is very high – only in the Sverdlovsk region several thousand people a year need such implantation. The question is who can do it cheaper and better. It can be a joint replacement or a special overlay of the required shape made of special material. “

The advantage of the approach of the Ural scientists and doctors is that the possibilities of personalized medicine are taken. In other words, what a specific person needs in his situation is being done. This is personalized and defines the niche of scientists and doctors of the Urals in this market.

Titanium will become one of the main materials that will be announced when creating implants – it is not an allergen, it is biocompatible, that is, it does not harm the body. Many other materials used in such cases poison the body. The use of 3D-technologies reduces the expenses drastically.
