UrFU Rector Participates in Presidential Meeting on Campuses

Victor Koksharov, Rector of the Ural Federal University, and Evgeny Kuivashev, Governor of the Sverdlovsk Region, and a member of the university supervisory board, took part in a meeting of Russian President Vladimir Putin with regional heads on the creation of a network of modern university campuses.

“According to demographers’ estimates, for more than a decade, the number of young people will grow steadily, and the children who are 10-12 years old today will come to study very soon in technical schools and universities. And, of course, we must work now, today, to provide them with broad, qualitatively new conditions for self-realization, for successful career and life growth, for them to become true professionals in their business and to receive reliable value and moral guidelines. This is, without any exaggeration, a strategic national-level task. Therefore, together with the regions and business, we are implementing several large projects to develop educational infrastructure,” said Vladimir Putin.

We want to remind you that the Sverdlovsk Region was one of the first regions to be selected for participation in the program to create world-class campuses. The first stage of creating modern infrastructure for UrFU was completed in the Novokoltsovsky district of Ekaterinburg. The legacy of the International University Sports Festival includes five dormitories with 8,500 beds, a community and medical center, a rugby training field, as well as related utility and road infrastructure: these facilities have become the property of the university, and students are already living in two buildings of the dormitories.

“Our campus is unique, it is a very large-scale project, 400 thousand square meters of territory, most of which is already in operation. New scientific laboratories: for example, a center for microelectronics, information security, and artificial intelligence, will complete the space where young people will not only live and learn but also immediately put their ideas into practice,” said Victor Koksharov.

It involves the construction of three academic buildings with a total area of over 100 thousand square meters for the Engineering School of Information Technologies, Telecommunications and Control Systems, the Institute of Economics and Management, and the Specialized Training and Research Center of UrFU. The complex is planned to be put into operation by the end of 2025. The project is being implemented on the instructions of Vladimir Putin as part of the Science and Universities national project.
