USTC Professor Elected Fellow of The Combustion Institute
Recently, The Combustion Institute (CI) announced the list of 2023 Fellows of The Combustion Institute, including 15 scholars from around the globe. Among those eminent scientists is Professor SUN Jinhua from the State Key Laboratory of Fire Science of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), who secured this international honor. (Three Chinese scholars are being elected in total.)
Founded in 1954, The Combustion Institute is the most authoritative academic organization in the international combustion field. Fellow of The Combustion Institute is a lifetime honor for illustrious scientists worldwide who have made outstanding contributions to the field of combustion. As the commendation put it, the honor was granted to Prof. SUN Jinhua “for outstanding contributions to the fundamental research on combustion and flame dynamics of building and new energy fires”.
SUN came to USTC in 2002 through the Introduction of Outstanding Foreign Talents held by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Now, he is a chair professor here and the director of the Academic Sub-Committee of the Fire Laboratory of USTC. He was also elected as a member of the European Union (EU) Academy of Sciences in 2018. Having been playing an active role in the sphere of combustion and fire science, Prof. SUN Jinhua has led a variety of organizations both at home and abroad. Those positions contain vice chairman of the Asia-Oceania Association for Fire Science and Technology (AOAFST), director of the International Association for Fire Safety Science (IAFSS), Expert of the State Council Expert Group on Production Safety, Expert of the First National Expert Group on Production Safety and Emergency Response, and so on. Furthermore, he is an editorial board member or deputy editor-in-chief of six international journals, including Fire Safety Journal and Safety, and other domestic journals.
Having been engaged in teaching and scientific research on the fire safety of new energy, industry, and building for a long time, Prof. SUN Jinhua has presided over more than 20 national projects such as the National “973” Program (Chief Scientist), Key Projects in National Natural Science Foundation, the National Key Research and Development Program, and EU International Science and Technology Cooperation Projects. He has made fruitful achievements in the prevention and control of fires caused by new energy, industry, and building. Notably, the results of lithium-ion battery fire prevention and control technology successfully incubated a high-tech enterprise. They were applied to State Grid, China Southern Power Grid, and other companies.
Professor Sun Jinhua has published more than 360 SCI papers in top international journals in the field of combustion, energy, and fire. Among them, there are more than 50 papers in journals with impact factors greater than 10, more than 12,000 citations in SCI papers, 8 academic monographs and textbooks, 2 national standards, and 3 group standards. Furthermore, he has also been awarded numerous prizes for his distinguished contributions.
