USTC: Suzhou Institute for Advanced Research Awarded as Suzhou Foreign Academician Workstation

The Suzhou Institute for Advanced Research of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) was inaugurated as Suzhou foreign academician workstation on 10 June. Supported by Professor Kim Meow LIEW’s team and the team of the Joint Laboratory of environmental science and technology of the USTC with the City University of Hong Kong (CityU), this paramount move will promote nanoscience and engineering research, cultivate talents, and promote further academic collaboration globally.

Professor Kim Meow LIEW is the Chair Professor of Civil Engineering at CityU. He enjoys great reputation and recognition for his achievement in the mechanical behavior of nanocomposites, material modeling, plates and shells, optimization, and fire engineering. He is elected as the Foreign Member of the European Academy of Sciences, the Fellow of the HKIE (Hong Kone), ASME (USA), IMechE (UK), and IES (Singapore). His achievement is well-acknowledged in that he has published over 800 journals with more than 40,000 citations.

The collaboration between USTC and CityU is long and profound. In 2004, the two universities signed an agreement in establishing the USTC–CityU Joint Advanced Research Centre (Suzhou), pursuing collaboration in academic research and talent education. Over the 18 years, a great number of scientific breakthroughs have been made and aroused global attention; 332 doctoral graduates have received their degrees and spreading their dedication to the development of society, including 23 Ph.D. under the supervision of Professor Liew.
