Utrecht University: USP tram/bus route renewal starts 26 June

For two months this summer there will be no trams on line 22 between Utrecht CS and USP. The combined tram/bus track in Utrecht Science Park will be renewed starting 26 June. The asphalt top layer and the construction with which the tram track is built will be replaced on this part of the line. Van Gelder BV is carrying out this work on behalf of the Province of Utrecht, which manages and maintains the tram line.

Renewal of the top layer is necessary because the road surface over which the trams and buses ride is crumbling in some parts. This poses risks to the safety of public transport. To be able to replace the top layer, tram line 22 has to be put out of service temporarily. Transport company U-OV will provide extra rides on bus line 28 instead. More information will be available on the Regiotram Utrecht and U-OV sites from 4 June.

Planning
Work is scheduled to take place between 26 June and 23 August 2021. Depending on the progress, there will be two weeks of reserve time. The work must be completed by 5 September at the latest, the start of the academic year in Utrecht. From that moment on, the trams will run again. The work area is located between the junction with the A27 motorway near the Padualaan stop and the bus turning loop next to the Princess Maxima Centre.

Nuisance
In order to limit the inconvenience, work will only be carried out between 7 am and 11 pm. The work that causes the least noise nuisance will be carried out in the evening. The university, companies and institutions in the Utrecht Science Park will remain accessible during the work. Bus 28 will be diverted in Utrecht Science Park due to the construction works and there will be a number of temporary stops. During the works, a number of crossings for cyclists and pedestrians will also be temporarily closed. Road users will be directed to the nearest crossing by traffic controllers.
