UTS: UTS welcomes Peter Shergold as new Chair of JMI
UTS Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Andrew Parfitt has welcomed today’s announcement that Professor Peter Shergold AC has been appointed Chair of the James Martin Institute for Public Policy (JMI).
JMI is an independent public policy institute established by the NSW Government in 2021 in partnership with UTS, Western Sydney University and the University of Sydney. JMI aims to transform public policy in NSW and beyond.
It aims to bring academic expertise into the early stages of policy making, working in partnership with government to enable the contestability of ideas.
JMI brings together policymakers, academics, industry, and community groups to identify solutions to complex policy challenges and deliver long-lasting public good.
“Professor Shergold’s deep experience of government and academia make him uniquely placed to guide the collaboration and innovation needed for JMI to tackle NSW’s biggest policy challenges,” Professor Parfitt said.
“He enjoys extraordinary respect across all sides of politics. His work with the corporate and not-for-profit sectors makes him an outstanding appointment.
“We look forward to working with Professor Shergold, as well as the Deputy Chair, UTS Pro Vice-Chancellor for Social Justice and Inclusion Verity Firth, and the rest of the JMI Board during this next phase of developing research-based policy solutions with real impact for the people of NSW.”
Professor Shergold’s many roles include serving as Secretary of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet from 2003–2008. He has also served 11 years as Chancellor of Western Sydney University, a role he is stepping down from at the end of the year.
