Vice President of India M. Venkaiah Naidu commends UPES for providing industry focused education at its 17th Convocation

Dehradun: UPES, a leading multi-disciplinary and specialization focused university, convened its 17th convocation at their Dehradun campus and conferred degrees to a total of 3741 students. The ceremony was graced by Hon’ble Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu. Hon’ble Shri Trivendra Singh Rawat- Chief Minister, Uttarakhand, Smt. Baby Rani Maurya- Hon’ble Governor, Uttarakhand and Visitor, UPES, Hon’ble Dr. Dhan Singh Rawat- Minister of State, Higher Education, Uttarakhand, presided over the function.

During his address at the 17th Convocation of UPES, Hon’ble Vice President said, “I commend the University for providing industry focused education in high growth sectors of Oil and Gas, Power, Infrastructure, Information Technology, Aviation, Shipping, Automotive, Electronics and International Business. I am also told that several companies visit the campus annually to recruit students and I am quite pleased to learn that right from the first graduating batch, campus placements of eligible students have witnessed a rising trend.”

UPES closed the 2018-19 academic year with 94% placements of eligible students. A total of 2211 students have been placed in 570 companies.

Amongst the students graduating this year, two graduated in PhD Higher Doctorate, 27 students graduated with PhD degrees, 573 students received their post-graduate (regular) degrees, 642 received post-graduate (Centre for Continuing Education-CCE) degrees, 2455 students graduated with (regular) degrees and 42 graduates were awarded with CCE degrees. 10 students were presented with gold medals while 72 students received the silver medals.

Speaking at the 17th convocation of the University, Dr. Deependra Kumar Jha, Vice Chancellor, UPES, said “It is a big day in the lives of all the students who are graduating today and marks the beginning of an exciting new phase. However, I would like to encourage the students to never stop learning in order to excel and succeed. It is also a momentous occasion for the University as we announce the launch of two new schools- School of Smart Agriculture and School of Modern Media”.

Two new schools launched at UPES

As part of the charter expansion, granted by Uttarakhand Government, UPES has announced the launch of two new schools- School of Smart Agriculture and School of Modern Media.

School of Smart Agriculture at UPES is uniquely positioned to focus on convergence of advanced technologies with existing agriculture practices to create a new offering in its existing eco-system.

Based on a more precise and resource-efficient approach with use of technology, Smart Farming has a real potential to deliver a more productive and sustainable agricultural production. Whether it is use of Artificial intelligence to detect diseases in plants or predict weather patterns, or use of Internet of Things, Big Data, Sensors, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Global Positioning Systems, Robotics, UPES already has necessary expertise and infrastructure via its School of Computer Sciences and School of Engineering, that can be suitably leveraged for application of these technologies in Agricultural studies.

School of Modern Media at UPES will prepare students to take on impactful roles in a rapidly evolving industry and equip them to leverage advances in new media.

The School will collaborate with reputed companies across TV, film, print and digital media in order to develop curriculum, get visiting faculty and provide internships to students and international exposure through study abroad options. The programs will focus on the digital medium along with core skills of content creation, broadcasting and production. UPES is setting up state-of-the-art media labs with best in class equipment to help students be job ready from Day 1.
