Visit of the Head of Karelia to the Institute of High Biomedical Technologies of PetrSU

Head of Karelia Artur Parfenchikov continues to get acquainted with scientific and innovative developments of Petrozavodsk State University. This time the Head of Karelia visited the Institute of High Biomedical Technologies, where he got acquainted with scientific discoveries in the field of biomedical technologies.
The Institute of High Biomedical Technologies was opened in 2014.

It includes seven specialized research laboratories: Laboratory of Molecular Genetics of Innate Immunity, Laboratory of New Methods of Physiological Research, Laboratory of Preclinical Research, Cell Pathology and Bioregulation, Laboratory of Clinical Epidemiology, Laboratory of Biologically Active Natural and Synthetic Organic Compounds, Laboratory of the DIABIMMUNE Project, A laboratory for telemedicine and electronic medical education, as well as the Unified Multifunctional Center for Modular Education (EMCME), a vivarium, two small innovative enterprises BIOGEN LLC and NanoPharm LLC.

We have accumulated vast scientific experience in the field of molecular biology, genetics, cell biology, physiology, epidemiology, the development of modern methods of prevention, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of a wide range of socially significant human diseases, all this served as the basis for the creation of the Institute of High Biomedical Technologies, which represents is a modern scientific and educational biomedical cluster, on its basis research is carried out in various fields of modern science. Scientific research in such areas as fundamental biomedicine, clinical medicine, medical education,

– said the rector of PetrSU Anatoly Voronin.

In the Laboratory of Molecular Genetics of Innate Immunity, Professor T.O. Volkova, head of IMBMT, deputy. Director of the Medical Institute for Research Work spoke about fundamental research in the field of oncoimmunology, diagnostic test systems, simulators of human biological fluids.

In the Laboratory of Biologically Active Natural and Synthetic Organic Compounds, the head of the laboratory, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor V.P. Andreev presented fundamental research in the field of bioorganic chemistry, the synthesis of new pharmacologically active compounds.

Professor I.A. Vinogradova, Head of the Laboratory for Preclinical Research, Cellular Pathology and Bioregulation, Head of the Department of Pharmacology, Organization and Economics of Pharmacy, Doctor of Medical Sciences, presented the results of many years of fundamental research in the field of gerontology, the development of vitamin premixes for residents of the North.

Professor O.Yu. Barysheva in the Laboratory of Clinical Epidemiology (clinical research in the field of socially significant human diseases in the North) spoke about the mobile multifunctional consultative and educational center of the Medical Institute.

A.P. Spasova, Associate Professor of the Department of Radiation Diagnostics and Radiation Therapy, introduced Artur Olegovich to the course of critical and respiratory medicine.

Professor A.Yu. Meigal, head of the Laboratory for New Methods of Physiological Research, presented to Arthur Olegovich new methods and approaches in the study of Parkinson’s disease, and also spoke about the results of the research, which he had presented the day before at the international conference in Moscow “Man in Space”.

I.V. Shubin showed how the work is carried out in the Accreditation and Simulation Center for students, doctors and pharmacists.

A.T. Balashov, Director of the Medical Institute, spoke about modern telemedicine technologies at the Laboratory of Telemedicine and Electronic Medical Education.

All subdivisions of IMBMT are a unified research platform for a comprehensive study of a person in the system: molecule – cell – tissue – organ – organism – environment. The Institute conducts research and development in the field of molecular genetics, oncoimmunology, neurophysiology, bioregulation, cell biology, pharmacology, epidemiology, bioinformatics and others. Interaction with Russian and foreign organizations leading developments in various fields of biomedicine is carried out,

– concluded Alexander Balashov.

Scientific research and development of the Institute is supported by grants from the Russian Science Foundation, the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, the Russian Humanitarian Science Foundation, federal targeted programs, grants from the President and the Government of the Russian Federation, as well as the RAS Program “Fundamental Sciences for Medicine”. The project activities of undergraduate and graduate students are supported by the Innovation Promotion Foundation. With innovative developments, IMBMT scientists annually participate in International conferences and exhibitions, receive gold and silver medals.

It is important that there is a connection between science and clinical medicine. The specialists who work in the Republican Hospital also work here, treating patients, applying the latest achievements in science. This is especially important for science to bring real help to people as quickly as possible.

I thank the leadership of the university, the rector of PetrSU Anatoly Viktorovich Voronin for such attention to the development of science in medicine. For our part, we will help the institute, which today is one of the 15 most worthy medical educational institutions in the country. Today I saw here a unique advanced medical equipment that can cooperate on an equal footing with the most advanced medical institutions and research institutes in the world. I am proud that there is such a university in Karelia, we will move even further to be among the best,

– said Artur Parfenchikov.

IMBMT employees have publications in the most prestigious international journals with a high citation index, such as Science, Nature, Cell Death and Differentiation, Cell Reports, Trends in Molecular Medicine, Frontiers in Immunology, The Journal of Immunology, Current Opinion in Microbiology, Immunity, Cytokine and Growth Factor Reviews, Journal of Biological Chemistry, PNAS, Frontiers in Neuroscience, Pathophysiology, Frontiers in Physiology, Current Aging Science, Infectious Agents and Cancer, Cancers, International Journal of Gynecological Cancer, FEBS Journal, Nature Microbiology, Cell, Cell Host and Microbe, European Journal of Endocrinology et al.
