Web conference on Museum as profession organized by the Department of Museology, Aligarh Muslim University

Aligarh : The two-day international web conference on ?Museum as Profession: Challenges & Issues? organized by the Department of Museology, Aligarh Muslim University, in collaboration with Ishan Promote Art, Culture and Improve Society, UP concluded with the note that the departments of Museology in India should start teaching at graduate level as optional subject in interdisciplinary faculties and modify the course content at postgraduate level to make it more applied and vocational in nature.

The panelists including Prof Poonam Chaudhary, Director Museum Institute, University of Jammu, Prof S Asif A Naqvi, former Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences and Mr Aziz Saleem Hasan, Museologist, Department of Museology, strongly vouched for filling up of all vacancies in Museology throughout the country with candidates having doctorate and master?s degrees in Museology or conservation. They also made it a point that the Museology curriculum at PG level should have similar syllabus across the country.

Dr Mohammad Irfan, Chairperson, Department of Museology said that there are about 1000 museums and five to six thousand museum personnel in the country. He said efforts should be made to popularize museum management at all levels, including through public and private means, which would ultimately create more job vacancies for Museology pass-outs in the country.

Programme convener, Mr Danish Mahmood encouraged informed that during the conference 8 technical sessions were conducted with about 50 papers presented by the participants. He said that more than 700 participants from across the globe attended the various technical sessions.
