Webinar held to mark International Yoga Day
ALIGARH : The Department of Sanskrit, Aligarh Muslim University organized a national webinar, marking International Yoga Day, which featured lectures on Patanjali’s Yogadarshana, Shri Aurobindo’s Integral Yoga, Jainism, Buddhism and Sufism.
A number of teachers, research scholars and students of other universities and colleges from Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Pondicherry, Odisha and West Bengal participated in the programme.
In his inaugural address, the chief guest, Prof. Arif Nazeer, Dean, Faculty of Arts highlighted the writings of Sant Kabirdas and Swami Gorakhnath and explained the merits of Yoga.
Prof. Sudhir Kumar Arya, Department of Sanskrit and Indic studies, JNU, New Delhi presented the essence of Patanjali’s Yogadarshana and explained its relevance in modern times.
Prof. Sanaullah Nadwi, Chairman, Department of Arabic, AMU discussed the works of Darashikoh, Al-Biruni and other Sufi saints and drew parallels in Sufism, similar to those found in Yogadarshana.
Prof. Poonam Jain, D.S. College, Aligarh discussed the merits of different types of meditations and other exercises as prescribed in the texts of Jainism for physical and mental purification.
Dr. Mohan Mishra, Department of Buddhist Studies, University of Delhi focused on the different concepts of Yoga in Buddhism and their universal relevance.
Earlier, Prof. Himanshu Shekhar Acharya, Chairman, Department of Sanskrit welcomed the speakers and participants and said that Yoga ensures rhythm of Body, Mind and Spirit. Yoga is a ray of hope in the midst of present chaotic global atmosphere. It ensures peace within individuals which ultimately leads to peace in society.
Ms Khusboo conducted the programme in Sanskrit and Ms Vishakha, a research scholar, extended the vote of thanks.
