Aligarh : Dr Santanu De, Faculty member, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur pressed the need for developing clean coal technologies with higher efficiency and reduced emission of greenhouse gases and explained why coal remains a primary driver of power generation in many countries.

He was delivering the keynote address in the webinar on ‘Fluidized Bed Gasification of High-Ash Coal’ of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Z H College of Engineering and Technology (ZHCET), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

Speaking on the working of an indigenously designed Gasifier Unit developed by him and his co-workers, Dr Santanu also demonstrated how lower NOx (oxides of nitrogen) production can be attained with significant reduction in the gasification temperatures and how the gas produced from the gasifier can be utilized in different applications.

“The objective is to achieve a steady and stable gasification operation and optimize the performance for different values of equivalence ratios and steam/coal ratios”, said Dr Santanu as he presented a detailed numerical analysis utilizing OpenFOAM and showed techniques for modeling turbulent combustion.

He later answered queries in an interactive session with students and faculty members.

In the welcome address, Professor M Muzammil (Chairman, Department of Mechanical Engineering) discussed the need for lower-carbon natural gas and its significant impact.

Prof Shah Shahood Alam extended the vote of thanks and Dr Sanaur Rehman conducted the programme.

Faculty members and students from across the globe and different parts of the Country participated in the programme.
