Wetland Kashmir celebrates Iconic Week UnderAzadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav
SRINAGAR: A valedictory function to mark Iconic week celebrations under Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav was organized by the Department of Wildlife at camping Hokersar Wetland Reserve (RAMSAR site) today.
The function was attended by Nazir Benazir, Chairman National Society for protection of water resources, forest & Wetlands, Rahi Reyaz vice chairman (NSPWR), Chairperson, Wildlife Research and Conservation foundation , Shri Suhail Yousuf Qazi, Range Officer, Wildlife Protection Range Lakes (Hokersar), Wildlife Mitra’s, children of various nearby schools, EDC members local Panchayat members of the villages around Hokersar Wetland Reserve and various officers and officials of the department. Prizes were distributed amongst the meritorious students of “Painting/ Poster Making competition” and “Run for Hokera” events and also certificate of participation were awarded among various students, Wildlife Mitra’s, N.G.O members who participated in week long events
Different speakers during the function highlighted the role of the target groups for conservation of Wetlands as unique ecosystem for our future and their significance in flood mitigation and Mrs. Ifshan Dewan, Wildlife Warden, Wetlands Division Kashmir, speaking at the end of the function appealed to all the stakeholders especially senior citizens, school going students, youth and to those who are directly or indirectly connected with Wetlands to join handswith the department for the protection and perpetuation of the existing Wetlands in the valley who are fast disappearing by the greed of the people and through natural calamities.
Wetland Ambassador: Mallard (Ans platyrhynchos) has been unanimously agreed to be the ambassador of Hokerar Conservation Reserve (RAMSAR-site) as it is one of the dominant species among the migratory birds visiting this wetland and it also breeds here.
