Wishes and Blessings NGO with Miranda House College Organized Flash Mob to promote gender equality

New Delhi :  Delhi based Wishes and Blessings NGO, in collaboration with Mridang: The Indian Dance Society of Miranda House, University of Delhi organized a powerful flashmob at Connaught Place on Friday evening.

As the lively streets of Connaught Place bustled with commuters and shoppers, the flashmob—featuring students from Mridang—suddenly captivated passersby. Through their choreography, the dancers conveyed a poignant narrative of women’s strength, resilience, and the ongoing struggle for equal opportunities in a world still plagued by gender biases. The goal of the flashmob was: to raise awareness about the inequalities that women encounter in their daily lives and to ignite conversations that could foster meaningful change. Through the art of dance, the participants expressed the urgent need for women to access opportunities free from the burdens of gender-based discrimination.

On this, Dr. Geetanjali Chopra, Founder & President of Wishes and Blessings, expressed her great conviction regarding the need for such initiatives. She said, “Even in today’s world with so much talk about equality and opportunities, we as a society tend not to meld any of these values into our practical reality. Women still face bias based on their gender.”

Her remarks resonated with the audience, many of whom were moved by the performance and its significant message. Dr. Chopra emphasized the gap between rhetoric and reality, pointing out that while conversations around gender equality have gained momentum, real-life implementation still lags considerably.

Barkha Hazarika, Business Development Manager at Wishes and Blessings, elaborated on the complex relationship between Indian society’s spiritual reverence for women and the discrimination they endure in daily life. “In India, we celebrate and worship goddesses. Just a week ago, we celebrated Durga Puja, and now we prepare for Lakshmi Puja and Kali puja. While these deities are female, the respect offered to them often does not extend into the everyday lives of women, who continue to struggle for the dignity and opportunities they deserve.”

Her reflection highlighted a cultural paradox prevalent in many parts of India, where women are revered in religious contexts but frequently encounter bias, discrimination, and even violence in social and professional spheres. This inconsistency underscores the need for continuous awareness and action, which Wishes and Blessings aims to address through initiatives like the flashmob.

The flashmob is part of Wishes and Blessings’ broader mission to combat gender-based inequalities and empower women to pursue their dreams without fear of judgment or bias. By raising awareness through creative expression, the organisation seeks to dismantle the social barriers that continue to impede women’s progress.

Flashmob – A Platform for Change

Events like this form part of a broader strategy employed by Wishes and Blessings to engage the public in meaningful discussions about women’s rights and gender equality. The organisation believes that art, particularly performance arts like dance, serves as a powerful medium for creating awareness and driving social change. The flashmob was not merely an event; it was a call to action for the audience and the community at large.

The public’s enthusiastic response to the performance reflects a growing recognition of the urgent need for gender equality across all facets of life. Many attendees expressed their appreciation for the initiative and emphasised the importance of ongoing conversations about women’s rights.
