Union Minister for Women and Child Smriti Irani has said that no person is above law in the country and the court has convicted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in accordance with that law. Addressing a Yuva Samvad event organised by Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya in Bengaluru on 23rd March 2023, Monday, Smriti Irani said that the Opposition is making it seem that the Government has disqualified Rahul Gandhi.

She pointed out that Rahul Gandhi made a racial slur against the entire OBC community and the court took cognizance of the matter under defamation law. She added that since the accused did not defend himself, it seems that the party he belongs to did not defend him or Rahul Gandhi thinks he is above the law.

She explained that the Lok Sabha Speaker has taken a decision to disqualify Rahul Gandhi as the law demands so. The Minister said that Rahul Gandhi lied abroad and that no Universities in India are inviting him. She questioned whether Rahul Gandhi has gone to any Universities in India and has the Government stopped the students from interacting with him. She asked the voters in India whether they believe that democracy is dead in India as stated by Rahul Gandhi abroad.

Speaking about the utilisation of the Nirbhaya Fund, the Minister said that the fund remained unused for the first two years during the UPA rule. When Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office in 2014, projects worth 9000 crore rupees were planned for women’s safety across the country.

For the first time in the country, anti-human trafficking units and One Stop Crisis Centres are opened in every district of the country. Women can get short-stay support, medical care and legal aid in these centres. She added that 1063 fast track courts are set up across the country for the victims of rape and sexual assault.
