Women’s College celebrates its College Day
ALIGARH : The Women’s College, Aligarh Muslim University celebrated it’s College Day, marking the longstanding legacy of commitment to women’s education and empowerment. On this occasion, a cultural evening was also organized with the students showcasing their talents in singing, dancing and acting.
In her welcome address, Dr. Humaira Afridi said that the day is celebrated to commemorate the foundation of Women’s College on 7th November, 1906, by Sheikh Abdullah, one of Sir Sayed’s disciples, in the Upper Fort area, in the form of a small madrasa with a few students.
The members of the music club beautifully presented the College Tarana and staged a skit titled, “Taleem-e-Niswan ki Ahmiyat”, with a strong message supporting girls’ education.
Dr. Imrana Khatoon presented Faiz’s poem which was followed by a group song, ‘Ay Aligarh, Rooh-e-Sayyed’ by the students, praising the unwavering legacy of AMU. A dance performance by Ms. Manasha Sharma further enlivened the auditorium.
Another thought-provoking skit, “Ek Lottery”, penned by Ms. Dania Hassan, was enacted by the students, portraying the struggles of women and sensitising people about the superstitious practices pertaining to women, prevalent in society.
Ms. Yasmin Fatima presented a ghazal of Sufi Siraj Aurangabadi and other students recited the poem, “Chalo Phir se Muskurayen” by Faiz Ahmed Faiz. This was followed by dance performances by Mahek and Ritambhira.
Prof. Nazia Hasan extended a vote of thanks, with special gratitude to the Principal, Prof. Masud Anwar Alvi, Prof. Imrana Naseem and other faculty members for their support and help. The programme, which concluded with Trana, was conducted by Prof. Nazia Hassan and Dr. Humaira Afridi.
