Workshop on ‘Irregular Heart Rhythm and Fast Heart Rates’

Aligarh : A workshop on ‘Irregular Heart Rhythm and Fast Heart Rates’ providing cardiology students with new knowledge, understanding, and competency in the area of practice was held at the Department of Cardiology, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

Eight patients underwent electrophysiology test and radiofrequency ablation in the workshop. Conducting the programme, the resource person, Dr Avinash Verma (Electrophysiologist, Fortis Hospital, Gurugram) said: “To diagnose a heart arrhythmia, the doctor will usually do a physical exam and ask questions about the medical history and symptoms. Tests are done to confirm an irregular heartbeat and look for conditions that can cause arrhythmias, such as heart or thyroid diseases”.

He explained that the series of tests that make the electrophysiology study examines the heart’s electrical activity and radiofrequency ablation helps in burning the abnormal connection in heart causing fast heart rates with controlled heat produced by radiofrequency waves.

“Various advances in technology and 3D mapping have come very handy for efficient treatment of patients. The facility of Radiofrequency ablation technique has replaced the life-long medicines on which patients used to depend earlier”, said Prof M U Rabbani (Chairman, Department of Cardiology). He added that this workshop has been very useful for the DM-Cardiology students. Prof Asif Hasan pressed for the need of more such workshops.
