World Earth Day 2024: Central University of Tamil Nadu Champions Environmental Awareness
Tiruvarur: On April 22nd, the world commemorated World Earth Day, a global initiative aimed at raising awareness about the imperative need to preserve our planet. Central University of Tamil Nadu’s Department of Geography, in alignment with this year’s theme “Planet vs. Plastics,” emphasized the urgent call to action against plastic pollution, the protection of biodiversity, and the restoration of Earth’s ecosystems through a special lecture titled “Coastal Geomorphology Mapping and Assessment – A Remote Sensing and GIS Perspective.”
The event was inaugurated by Prof. Sulochana Shekhar, Controller of Examination at the Central University of Tamil Nadu. Prof Sulochana Shekhar, while delivering a felicitation address, Prof Sulochana Shekhar said, “We are proud to champion environmental awareness and education through initiatives like World Earth Day. By fostering dialogue and practical learning experiences, we empower our students and scholars to become agents of positive change in safeguarding our planet.”
Dr. S. Kaliraj, Scientist D from the National Centre for Earth Science Studies, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Thiruvananthapuram, delivered an insightful lecture, shedding light on various aspects of coastal ecosystems, human interventions, and their repercussions on marine environments.
Nearly 60 participants engaged in the seminar, receiving hands-on training in automated extraction of shorelines and shoreline change detection using remote sensing data. This practical approach not only enhances participants’ analytical skills but also augments their employability and entrepreneurship potential in environmental science and conservation fields.
