World Physiotherapy Week – 2019 Inaugurated at Amity University

New Delhi: With chronic pain affecting 1 in every 5 people across the globe, Amity Institute of Physiotherapy (AIPT) chose “Chronic Pain” as the theme for its World Physiotherapy Week – 2019 starting from 9 September to 13 September, 2019 at Amity University Uttar Pradesh (AUUP), Noida Campus. The five-day long celebrations interspersed with various academic, cultural and social activities along with health check-up and awareness camps started today to commemorate World Physiotherapy Day, celebrated every year on 8 September, 2019.

Dr VP Gupta, Chief Physiotherapist- CTVS, AIIMS and Dr Jaswinder Kaur, HOD, Physiotherapy, Dr RML Hospital were the Chief Guests for the inaugural session. Dr Rahul Sharma, Director Head, QRG Hospital, Faridabad and Dr. Meenakshi Rajput, Head of department Physiotherapy Services Jaipur Golden Hospital, were the Special Guests present to kick start the celebrations at the campus.

Calling the theme of ‘Chronic Pain’ as extremely relevant in the present times, Dr VP Gupta urged the students to convert their skills and knowledge to give the best healthcare to the humanity. “These celebrations make us remember our responsibilities. Also the importance of the profession can be gauged from the fact that it was discovered only 6-7 decades back and now no one can remain without it,” said Dr Gupta. He also advised the students to refer to the bank of knowledge through researches and works of Physiotherapists who had advocated physiotherapy interventions. With physiotherapists being the last destination for any patient suffering from pain, the field of physiotherapy has assumed a significant position in today’s times.

Dr Jaswinder Kaur lauded the infrastructure at Amity University and urged the students to make full use of it. “While the theme of chronic pain is extremely relevant in today’s times, pain is also useful at times as it’s an indicator that something wrong is happening with the body and preventive action should be taken,” shared Dr Kaur. Referring to the faculty as banks of knowledge, she advised the students to deepen their knowledge with the exposure they are getting at Amity Institute of Physiotherapy.

Views were also shared on how chronic pain is the outcome of a sedentary lifestyle, even amongst the youth today that has been causing a number of more health issues to crop up. Experts advised students to maintain a healthy lifestyle and instill regular physical activity as part of their daily routine.

As part of the five-day long activities, Bone Mineral Density Camp for Faculty and Staff of AUUP; Pulmonary Function Test Camp & Health Awareness Program and Physiotherapy Camp (for Back and Neck Pain) inside the Amity Campus will be organized.

Along with these internal activities a Geriatric care camp (Chronic Pain Management) for the senior citizens at Shanti Dham Old Age Home, Greater Noida and a Community Physiotherapy Camp at Sultanpur Villages, Sec 128, Noida will also be arranged by the students and faculty of Amity Institute of Physiotherapy.
