XLRI – Xavier School of Management, Jamshedpur celebrated the ‘National Librarians’ Day’ at Sir Jehangir Ghandy Library
XLRI – Xavier School of Management, Jamshedpur celebrated the ‘National Librarians’ Day’ at Sir Jehangir Ghandy Library on 14th August 2024 in remembrance of the 132nd birth anniversary (12th Aug) of Padma Shri Late. Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, the Father of Indian Library Science.
The faculty, staff, researchers, students and library staff members were present on this formal celebration.
Chief Guest Fr S George SJ, Director, XLRI, Jamshedpur garlanded the photo of Dr. S R Ranganathan. Guest of Honour Shri Ravi Shankar Shukla IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Seraikela Kharsawan, Jharkhand, Prof. Giridhar Ramachandran, Marketing Area, Mr. D.T. Edwin, Head – Library offered their homage to Dr. S R Ranganathan.
A formal function started with a prayer song by Ms. Anjali Kispotta, Ms Neha Vandana Minz and Mr Felix Roy. A welcome speech was delivered by Ms. Alma Toppo wherein she briefed the career journey of Dr. S R Ranganathan.
Mr D.T. Edwin, Head-Library, conveyed the greetings of the day to the library colleagues, ex-colleagues and library interns. He expressed the overall growth of XLRI Library, especially the strategical growth of the library collection, enhanced premium services, and professional & skilful human resources. Also, described the recent achievements and growth of the library like Digital Repository, Research Information System and Digital Archive.
Fr. S. George, SJ, Director launched ‘Summon – Discovery Service’ and Coral – ERMS. In his speech he said books are the only companion whom one can totally rely on, books are the best friends and reading book is essential part for the complete development of a person. He talked about the importance of reading books over YouTube learning, video learning, visual movies. He said Library is the source of destination of knowledge. Also, he felicitated the library staff members with mementos and gifts.
Prof. Giridhar Ramachandran introduced the Guest of Honour Shri Ravi Shankar Shukla IAS, and remembered his cooperation during covid period. He also explained his achievements and initiatives on the library services. He presented the prizes of the Coursera Toppers of the institute.
Shri Ravi Shankar Shukla IAS, Deputy Commissioner launched the new Human Library and conveyed his gratitude to various librarians in his life. He suggested that libraries should have subject as well as light reading books. And the library services and knowledge to be free for users He answered the queries of the audience and requested all to have a visit to district library nearby. He presented the prizes to the winners of the Library Quiz conducted on 07th Aug 2024.He also autographed and presented a book titled ‘Covid – 19 Governance In India Series – I by Centre for Disaster Management, Mussoorie to Fr. S. George, SJ, Director.
Mr D.T. Edwin, Head – Library said that ‘Summon – Discovery Service’ is a unified search portal which allows to search from all the subscribed online resources, provides thick meta data, renders the citation from both Scopus & Web of Science and the Altimetric. And Coral is an open-source Electronic Resource Management which replaces multiple excel sheets and email records of the process. Human Library will have Human Books. The Human Library is a place where real people are on loan to readers.
The formal program ended with the vote of thanks by Ms Pinky Kumari and the National Anthem.
