It is emphasized in the report to the 20th National Congress of the CPC that China will persist in advancing its rejuvenation on all fronts through a Chinese path to modernization. Promoting regional coordinated development is one of the important driving forces for consolidating Chinese modernization.

The 2nd Forum on Regional Coordinated Development Strategy in China was held on Zijingang Campus of Zhejiang University on November 20, 2022. Experts and scholars nationwide studied together the content and philosophy of the report through online and offline live streaming. Themed on “regional coordinated development and Chinese modernization”, the participants had in-depth discussions, built broad consensus, and offered perceptive suggestions.

In addition to the keynote speeches, a thematic forum and a round-table forum were held to probe into the theories and policies for promoting regional coordinated development, building a new pattern of high-quality development, and forging a Chinese path to modernization. A cohort of experts and scholars contributed their unique views. For example, HOU Yongzhi believed that promoting regional coordinated development requires proper handling of various relationships in the process of regional development, including the relationships between efficiency and equity, development and security, current and long-term, global and local, government and market, and that a systematic approach should be adopted. HE Lansheng asserted that “harmony”, the core of the Chinese culture, is the soul, the underlying feature, distinctive characteristic, and highlight of Chinese agricultural and rural modernization.

Three new books were also released at the Forum, i.e., Report on Western Region Development of China (2021), Typical Cases of Cross-Regional Cooperation in Zhejiang, and Digital Yangtze River Delta Strategy 2022: Digital Rule of Law. Major research topics on regional coordinated development and Chinese modernization, the project of Regional Development Policy Brain, and the China Coordinated Regional Development Index Report (2022) were also released. The Regional Development Policy Brain is an interdisciplinary intelligent decision-making platform fully built by the Research Center, with the major functions of simulation and deduction, monitoring and early warning, and evaluation and review, providing reliable data and technical support for the implementation of regional coordinated development strategies and regional policy formulation and adjustment. The China Coordinated Regional Development Index Report (2022) provides an in-depth interpretation of the ten-year changes and development trends of China’s regional development, and puts forward specific policy recommendations to promote regional coordinated development to a higher level and higher quality based on the target requirements and task orientation proposed by the 20th National Congress of the CPC.

The Forum was co-hosted by Zhejiang University, the Regional Science Association of China, the Department of Development Strategy and Regional Economy of the Development Research Center of the State Council, the Research Institute for Eco-civilization of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and the Institute of Geographical Sciences and Natural Resources Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and co-organized by the Research Center for Regional Coordinated Development of Zhejiang University, China Academy of West Region Development, and the Yangtze River Delta Integrated Development Research Center of Zhejiang University.
