King’s College London’s Professor Kate Tchanturia Receives Prestigious National Award of Georgia

Professor Kate Tchanturia has been honoured with the National Award of Georgia on 29th April 2024. The award was presented by the President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, who highlighted Professor Tchanturia’s exceptional achievements and her dedication to enhancing the understanding of psychology on a global scale. As a Professor of Psychology in Eating Disorders at King’s College London as well as visiting Professor of Clinical Psychology at the Illia State University, Georgia, Professor Tchanturia continues to facilitate collaborations and research worldwide.

Recipients for The National Award of Georgia are selected for their high-level scientific achievements that have received universal recognition and have significantly contributed to both Georgian and global scientific, social, and economic development. This prestigious award recognises Professor Tchanturia’s outstanding contributions to psychology and her leadership in fostering international collaborative research between Georgia and the worldwide scientific community.

I am deeply honoured to receive The National Award from the President of Georgia. My career began in Tbilisi State University, Georgia, before I moved to the United Kingdom, where I have worked in the Department of Psychological Medicine at the IoPPN for the last 27 years. It is my honour and duty to support and facilitate the continued collaboration between Georgia and United Kingdom.

Professor Kate Tchanturia, King’s IoPPN

Professor Tchanturia graduated from Tbilisi State University, Georgia, and since 1997, has worked at King’s College London. Her research focuses on women’s mental health, experimental research in cognitive and emotional processes in eating disorders, comorbid conditions, and the development of innovative and researched informed manualised treatments. Professor Tchanturia’s research laboratory includes researchers, postdoctoral research workers, PhD students, Doctoral Clinical psychology trainees, MSc students and international academic visitors.

At the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, Professor Tchanturia is also a Consultant Clinical Psychologist for a national eating disorder service. She leads the clinical psychology team NHS adult eating disorder service, taking part in strategic planning, and developing new clinical pathways and co-production of service innovation with people with lived experience.

Outside of King’s, Professor Tchanturia is a fellow of the Academy of Europe, the British Psychological Society, the Academy of Eating Disorders, and the Higher Education Academy UK.
