SADC Member States to reflect on Data Gaps for SDG 4 targets

Representatives from SADC countries converge for a consultation webinar on Data Gaps for Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SGD 4) targets and National Education Management and Information Systems (EMIS) on 29 January 2021.

Participants will be primarily from Ministries of education, education policy makers, planners and statisticians. The webinar follows a SADC/UNESCO-commissioned study that examined the progress and challenges that national education data and information systems face in producing reliable information on SDG4.

The webinar will therefore see the presentation of an overview of the status of the monitoring of the SDG4 targets in SADC Member States. Drawing upon country case studies conducted in Mozambique, Namibia, and Zimbabwe, participants will discuss the data gaps, data challenges and best practices of EMIS in line with SDG4 and the Continental Education Strategy (CESA) targets.

Delegates will also discuss with experts and Member States, and look into ways for UNESCO and partners to support countries to improve their data production chain and more effectively monitor the implementation of SDG4.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is a plan of action for people, planet and prosperity. It comprises 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).  These goals are indivisible and encompass economic, social and environmental dimensions. Referring to SDG 4, the aim is to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all” and comprises 10 targets. UNESCO’s mandate is to lead SDG4 implementation and coordination through supporting its member states in policy guidance, capacity development, monitoring and advocacy.
