University of Cape Town: The Baxter’s Zabalaza Theatre Festival is here
Hold onto your seats: the Baxter’s Zabalaza Theatre Festival is back and it’s ready to “wow”! The week-long programme boasts an impressive line-up guaranteed to keep the audience on the edge of their seats. This year marks 11 years since the festival was first established.
The festival kicks off on Friday, 19 March, under strict COVID-19 guidelines, and the final performance will take place on Saturday, 27 March. The notable line-up includes 21 productions and events, and 200 artists and performers will take to the stage.
Following the success of the Zabalaza Challenge initiated in 2018, the ticket donation makes a comeback this year. The initiative encourages individuals, businesses and organisations to purchase tickets in bulk for only R30 a ticket. These tickets are donated to those who cannot afford them.
The University of Cape Town’s (UCT) vice-chancellor, Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng, has pledged her support for the initiative, which contributes meaningfully to the festival, as well as to the artists and the arts.
