Launch of ‘ICH Outcome Predictor at KMC’

Manipal : A Predictive Model for Intracerebral Hemorrhage(ICH) outcome using Machine Learning Techniques called ‘ICH Outcome Predictor’ was launched by Dr. H S Ballal, Pro Chancellor, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Lt. Gen. (Dr) M D Venkatesh, Vice Chancellor, MAHE, Dr. Narayan Sabhahit, Registrar, MAHE, Dr. Sharath Rao, Dean, KMC Manipal, Cdr.(Dr) Anil Rana, Director, MIT, Manipal and Dr.Somashekhara Bhat, Joint Director, MIT, Manipal. The specialised software, “ICH outcome predictor”, was jointly developed by Kumudha Health Tech Private Limited, a spinoff of MAHE & incubated in MUTBI and the Department of Neurosurgery, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, MAHE.

The ICH predictive model was developed using Machine learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to predict mortality and morbidity in Spontaneous Intracerebral Hemorrhage. It enables doctors to take data driven decisions that will improve quality of life in this severely disabling disease.

The machine learning model uses a large dataset of patients with intracranial haemorrhage from the in-house ICH register maintained by the Department of Neurosurgery, Kasturba Medical College. The data set having more than 1,00,000 records was analysed using intelligent machine learning algorithms to pick 17 attributes which impact outcome. These attributes were then processed with feedback from Neurosurgeons at KMC Manipal. This innovative product is an outcome of collaborative work of the Department of Neurosurgery and M/s.Kududha Health Tech Pvt. Ltd. It is an online web-based prediction tool easily accessible at on http://ich.kumudha.tech/ to provide beside results when patients are admitted.

Dr. HS Ballal, Pro Chancellor, MAHE while speaking after the launch, congratulated the Kumudha Health Tech Pvt. and the Department of Neurosurgery, KMC for successful implementation of the joint research work collaboratively and insisted to bring many more such applications which would improve the lives of common people in the society. He also highlighted the importance of these type of tools in improving the quality of life by altering the treatment plan and insisted to take an advantage of the multi-disciplinary campus at MAHE and come out with many more such applications to help the society.

Lt. Gen (Dr.) MD Venkatesh, Vice Chancellor, MAHE speaking in the occasion, congratulated both the teams and appreciated the joint effort of medicine and technology towards developing a product as a result of interdisciplinary research. This is a potential tool to predict possible outcomes in patients of stroke and help the doctors to prioritise the attention of treatment. It is a demonstration of collaborative effort happening between medicine and technology using AI & ML towards algorithmic decision support system and is very relevant in the current context. The web application developed using AI algorithms, could be used by other hospitals across the country after the successful completion of multi-centre validation.

Prof Jeyaraj Pandian, President, Indian Stroke Association and Principal of Christian Medical College, Ludhiana, speaking in the occasion said, today the technology has become more advanced and intelligent can potentially help the doctors in cases like stoke. He encouraged the team to proceed with multicentric validation of the project.

Dr. Girish Menon, HoD, briefed about the importance of outcome prediction in intracerebral haemorrhage. The prediction of outcome at admission will help relatives and medical staff to tailor patient care and treatment in this very disabling type of stroke. Further he emphasised that the uniqueness of this system lies in using in house data and outcomes of patients treated by Neurosurgery department, KMC Manipal rather than generic outcomes normally quoted from national and international research groups. MAHE intends to proceed with a multi centric trial involving all major neurosciences departments in the country to validate the findings observed in our institute. The application will hopefully be able to the reach the general public once it is validated

Dr.Hareesha KS, Director, Kumudha Health Tech Pvt. has explained how the model was developed using some of the most appropriate ML algorithms to understand the data more sensibly and realize the unique pattern to do the prediction. Also explained how the model was fine-tuned and optimized to make it robust enough to handle any situation. He also encouraged doctors to make a best of it and get an immediate help for a prognostic treatment planning. Dr.Sampath Kumar, MD, Kumudha Health Tech Pvt. Ltd. was also present in the function.
