Durham University: Our Arts and Humanities subjects are ranked in world’s top 30

The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject 2022 placed our Arts and Humanities in 26th position amongst a competing league of global universities.

Hundreds of universities across the world are ranked by the THE global rankings, which are based on teaching, research, citations, international outlook and industry income.

Our impactful Arts and Humanities research
Our Faculty of Arts and Humanities is consistently ranked amongst the top because of our pioneering research that makes a difference in the world.

Our Knowledge for Use (K4U) research led by Professor Nancy Cartwright in our Philosophy Department shows how to put scientific research and common knowledge together to build more decent societies.

Dr Adam Powell, from our Department of Theology and Religion, conducted ground-breaking research in why some people report ‘hearing the dead’ – part of ‘Hearing the Voice’. This is a major interdisciplinary study of voice-hearing, which won the UKRI Medical Humanities Award for Best Research.

Academics from our world-leading Music Department revealed that ‘happy’ and ‘sad’ music perceptions are connected to cultural heritage, by comparing how people in the UK and two tribes in remote North-West Pakistan perceive music and sound.

We are at the forefront of Lumiere light festival 2021. Kayo Chingonyi, from our Department of English Studies, is among leading poets who will have specially commissioned work projected onto Durham Castle. His piece explores the theme of light and dark.

We are also actively supporting Durham’s bid to be the UK City of Culture 2025 as a principal partner.

We are extraordinary
We don’t consider our rankings just as numbers but a reflection of the extraordinary capabilities and influence of our world-class scholars and academics.

Our teaching and research distinctiveness is defined by our global rank of being a world top-100 university in the QS World University Rankings 2022.

We are also ranked 5th in the Guardian University Guide 2022 and 6th in The Complete University Guide 2022.

The rankings align with our global excellence in academia, that makes our researchers leading experts in their field and our graduates highly sought after by leading employers globally.
