Aligarh: The Story of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) research scholar from the Department of Statistics and Operations Research, Amit Kumar is of grit, motivation and inspiration. Not only did the bright inquisitor of the collection, organization, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of data topped the Indian Statistical Service (ISS) exam of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), but he also aced the selection procedure for a position in the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Grade B-DSIM with the second rank.
Biggest challenge for any UPSC aspirant is to keep the momentum of the preparation on the right track till the goal is achieved, said the ISS topper adding that the key to a successful journey requires that you strive despite incredible odds.
Amit shared that it was when the pandemic brought life to a standstill that he indulged smartly into an in-depth study of various statistical methods, data processing, national and international official statistical systems, sector-wise statistics and national accounts, linear estimations, statistical information and case studies and working of National Sample Survey Office (NSSO).
“I divided time wisely to prepare for the two descriptive and two objective papers of Statistics and the General English and General Studies papers. I prepared adequately to understand the key concepts, highlighted all important points in my notes, solved numerous sample papers and never missed any updates on my subject”, said Amit.
He added: “I decided to work hard and channelise my energy in the right direction. I didn’t look back and the desired results have come now”.
Amit pointed out: “I have studied thoroughly in my graduation, post-graduation and research courses and it all came handy during the ISS preparations. But, the direction to crack the exam would not have been possible without the guidance of teachers at the Department of Statistics and Operations Research in AMU”.
He had appeared in six different papers of UPSC ISS exam held from July 16 to 18 followed by Personality Test interview in the last week of November.
Extending congratulations to Amit on his well-deserved success, Prof Aquil Ahmed (Chairman, Department of Statistics and Operations Research) said that it is heartening to see that Amit managed to top the ISS exam at a time, when academic activities across the country were put on hold due to the Covid pandemic.
“Amit is an inspiration to AMU students and the University community. His success is also a testimony of the guidance provided by the faculty members”, he added.
