Ural Federal University: Topical Issues in Linguistics Discussed at the University

February 11 at the Department of Foreign Languages at the Ural Institute of Humanities Ural Federal University held the X International Scientific Conference of Young Scientists “Current Issues of Translation, Linguistics, History of Literature and Folklore”, dedicated to the memory of Oleg Skvortsov.

The work was conducted in two areas – linguistics and literary studies, in three sections. Participants heard 28 speeches and 16 correspondence reports.

“It was very interesting and useful to exchange experiences with colleagues, to discuss the achievements already made and to be inspired with ideas for further research. Our conference helps to maintain a productive scientific dialogue, which is very important in such difficult times,” shared the opinion of conference participant Elizaveta Gusenkova.

Researchers of four educational levels presented their reports: high school students, 3-4 year undergraduate students, graduate students and postgraduate students. Young researchers were able not only to exchange scientific experience and share the results of their research, but also to realize the difference in the choice of research topic, its development, the multidimensionality and depth of the findings.

Section leaders noted the high level of papers of the participants, and in one of the areas even had to share the diploma for the best paper between several students. Particularly worth mentioning is the productive participation of students from high school № 110 and gymnasium № 35 in the conference. They presented strong papers which were worthy of being presented at the university level.

Russian geography was represented by participants from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Ekaterinburg, Izhevsk, Chelyabinsk, Kaluga, and Surgut. Foreign representatives came from Kazakhstan, Argentina, Turkey, and China.

Simultaneous translation into English was an innovation in the organization of the conference. Three simultaneous interpreters, master’s students in the Interpretation, Cross-cultural Communication and Cognitive Linguistics program, translated in real time the plenary session and part of the presentations in one of the sections.

In addition to scientific activities, the conference also paid attention to the creative component. So, the decoration of the plenary session was a violin composition from guests from Chelyabinsk, it was performed by Yigit Javit, a master’s student from South Ural State Humanitarian Pedagogical University from Turkey.
