New York University: Glucksman Ireland House to Celebrate 10th Annual Gala at New York City’s Iconic Rainbow Room
Renowned for its teaching, research and public humanities initiatives, Glucksman Ireland House at New York University will hold its 10th annual gala on Monday, Apr. 11, at 6.30 p.m. (ET) at the iconic Rainbow Room at Rockefeller Center.
The event, hosted by the NYU center for study of Ireland and the Irish diaspora will honor three leaders of philanthropy, arts and journalism: Eugene M. McQuade, chair of the American Ireland Fund, who will receive the Lewis L. Glucksman Leadership Award; Ruth Negga, Oscar-nominated actress, who will receive the Seamus Heaney Award for Arts and Letters; and Mike Barnicle, veteran journalist and MSNBC commentator, who will receive the Pete Hamill Award for Journalistic Excellence.
In the past decade, Glucksman Ireland House has honored incredible ambassadors of Ireland and Irish America including Loretta Brennan Glucksman, Pete Hamill, Michael “Buzzy” O’Keeffe, Peter Quinn, Ted Smyth, Colum McCann, Danny McDonald, Sir James Galway, Niall O’Dowd, Paul Muldoon, Carl Shanahan, Alice McDermott, Jim Rooney, Colm Tóibín, Dómhnall Slattery, President Mary McAleese, Anne Finucane and Dan Barry. This stellar lineup of past honorees has enabled NYU to celebrate the legacies of three remarkable individuals through the Lewis L. Glucksman Award for Leadership, the Seamus Heaney Award for Arts and Letters, and the Pete Hamill Award for Journalistic Excellence.
Lewis L. (Lew) Glucksman, a veteran of Wall Street and an international philanthropist, founded Glucksman Ireland House with Loretta Brennan Glucksman in 1993. Seamus Heaney, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1995, was fêted at the first Glucksman gala in 2013 just months before his untimely passing. Pete Hamill, renowned journalist and commentator on New York, was a longstanding member of the Glucksman Ireland House advisory board and a generous supporter of all of its activities.
Glucksman Ireland House stands as a beacon of Irish and Irish-American academic and cultural achievement in the United States and beyond. Proceeds from the gala will help support Glucksman Ireland House’s academic and outreach activity, such as the NYU Press Glucksman Irish Diaspora Series. Always an evening of fun and conviviality, will feature musical entertainment by the celebrated flutist Joanie Madden accompanied by Cherish the Ladies.
