Ural Federal University: University Students Join Folklore Film Expedition

Students and faculty of the Ural Institute of Humanities at Ural Federal University will go to the Visim village in July to collect Ural folklore works. All dialogues with bearers of unique information will form the basis of a film, which will be shown at the “Oika” film festival.

Over 10 students will take part in the project, for them it is a continuation of the annual educational practice in a new environment. The students will become not only folklore researchers, but also filmmakers.

“The Demidovs moved to Ekaterinburg migrants from Ukraine and central Russia. As a result, three ethnic and religious groups lived in Visim: Ukrainians, Tulians, and Kerzhaks. A very peculiar ethnic community emerged, in which people spoke different dialects, built houses in different ways, married in different ways, but still lived together,” said Natalya Gramatchikova, Associate Professor at the Department of Russian and Foreign Literature at the Faculty of Philology of UrFU, Head of Folklore Practice for Philology Students, Senior Researcher at the Institute of Literature History and Archaeology of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

In September this year in Ekaterinburg will be held the II Festival of the Urals cinema “Oika”. It will show a documentary report from the research expedition of the Ural Institute of Humanities. The final product will be seen by viewers of Perm, Chelyabinsk, Ekaterinburg and Nizhny Tagil.
