Oleg Kuvshinov and Kirill Stafeev, students of the Ural Federal University, made it to the finals of the fifth annual inter-university competition among graduates of the Samsung IT Academy social and educational project. They presented the Singing Garden project, a network of sensors installed at various points in the garden and equipped with a radio transmitting module. A total of 13 student projects from five Russian cities made it to the finals as a result of the selection process.

“The idea of the project is to develop an Internet of Things system, which includes a network of devices equipped with sensors to collect data on the state of the environment and the physiological state of the fruit trees of the orchard-museum. The melody synthesized from the received data is played through a speaker, creating musical accompaniment on the territory of the orchard and museum,” said Natalya Papulovskaya, Associate Professor at the Department of Information Technology and Management Systems at UrFU.

Readings from sensors mounted on the trees are sent to a data collection server, where they are processed and converted into sound. This sound is immediately played through a loudspeaker, creating a musical accompaniment to the garden area. The sound changes according to the changes in the sensor readings, which are generated by the current state of the plants. The sensor devices are disguised as figures of an owl and a cat.

The aim of the project was to draw attention to the monument of architecture house-museum and apple garden of breeder Dmitry Kazantsev.
