MSc Molecular and Cellular Basis of Human Disease
The University of Sheffield, UK is inviting applications for MSc Molecular and Cellular Basis of Human Disease course starting in September 2021.
Whole genome sequencing has opened up a new era of studies into the molecular and cellular basis of human disease. This unique research-led masters course provides training to future scientists in the production and use of animal models for basic research into disease mechanisms and for therapeutic studies.
The new molecular genetic and cellular approaches to understand human disease and disease processes in model systems are well established in our department, with some of the world’s foremost research in these areas being conducted in Sheffield.
This 12-month course has been built around our expertise in molecular and cellular biology to offer specialist practical and lecture modules on the mechanisms behind human disease. Possible topics include developmental genetics, epithelial physiology and cancer biology – a full list of current modules is given below. Students will also get training in the skills every professional scientist needs, such as research ethics and literature analysis.
The biggest part of the degree will be the extended research project. Students will work alongside professional scientists, and under the supervision of one of the academic staff. Students will be based in either the Department of Biomedical Science or in a related department at the University of Sheffield, depending on their project. Students will be trained to use the specialist equipment that is needed to complete their project, and support will be provided to help them design their experiments, analyse their results and present their findings.
Eligibility – Holders of a three year bachelor degree with a minimum of 65% or “first class” from a reputable university in a biomedical-related subject. Medical students who wish to intercalate their studies are also accepted. Overall IELTS grade of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each component, or equivalent.
Fee– Overseas students (2020 annual fee) is £ 25, 850 and the fee for 2021 is yet to be announced.
