National Chemistry Week observed in AMU
Aligarh: A national webinar featuring eminent scientists and an online quiz competition on the importance of chemistry in improving the quality of life were held at the Department of Chemistry, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) to observe the ‘National Chemistry Week ‘. The programme was organised in collaboration with the International Students Chapter American Chemical Society, AMU.
In the webinar, Prof P Shanmugham (Distinguished researcher and Principal Scientist, Central Leather Research Institute, Chennai) spoke on the importance of soil bioremediation, an effective method to counterfeit the environmental contamination with special focus chromium poisoning.
Dr P Ragupathy (Senior Scientist, Central Electrochemical Research Institute, Karaikudi) discussed the use of smart and clean energy storage devices. He stressed the need to develop new materials for batteries capable of providing high energy density without overheating.
In the presidential address, Prof Qazi Mazhar Ali (Dean, Faculty of Sciences) said that these webinars are helping students to interact with well known scientists working in applied interdisciplinary research areas.
Prof Sartaj Tabassum (Chairman, Department of Chemistry) highlighted the importance of chemistry in industry and academia.
Prof Farukh Arjmand (Co-Director, APJAK STEM ER centre, AMU-OSU, USA) discussed relevance and importance of STEM Education and chemistry. She further spoke on empowering female students with higher studies in STEM subjects.
Prof Anees Ahmed (Coordinator, Industrial Chemistry) extended the vote of thanks. Dr Mohammad Zain Khan delivered the welcome address.
Mahima, Annie Hasan and Laiba Saleem bagged the first, second and third prizes respectively in the quiz.
