AMU Celebrates Constitution Day

Aligarh : Symposia, lectures and other events combined with reading of the Preamble to the Constitution of India were held across Departments in Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) to celebrate the ‘Constitution Day’ with fervour and gaiety, commemorating the adoption of the Constitution as ‘Jan Bhagidari’.

In a symposium at the Department of Political Science, Prof Arshi Khan spoke on the philosophy and vision of Indian Constitution. “Imperial rule in India was rule of leviathan, biased and prejudiced and Indian Constitution was expression of general will”, he said.

Prof Rachana Kaushal emphasized on the seminal role played by women in the making of Indian Constitution while speaking on ‘gender rights and Indian Constitution’.

Prof M. Mohibul Haq discussed the definition of minority, and minority rights in the Constitution. He also delineated Constituent Assembly debate about minority rights and changes that were made afterwards.

Prof Aftab Alam discussed in detail about the scheme of Indian Constitution while presenting an overview, approaches and theoretical framework pertaining to the Constitution.

Dr Irfanul Haq and Parvez Alam spoke on ‘Kashmir question and Indian Constitution: continuities and discontinuities’, and ‘Indian Constitution as charter of social and economic democracy’ respectively.

Presiding over the programme, Prof Iqbalur Rehman, Chairperson, Department of Political Science, said the constitution speaks about relations between its people and the state.

The proceedings were conducted by Dr. Firdaus Ahmad Batt.

In a programme at the Department of Philosophy, Dr. Aquil Ahmad (Chairperson) delineated upon the special features and uniqueness of Indian Constitution envisioned by the makers of the constitution. Touching upon the theme of this year’s Constitution Day, “India: The Mother of Democracy”, Dr. Ahmad said Licchavi’s experiments with democracy are considered as the oldest model of democracy in the world as the precursor of the modern concept of democracy.

The programme began with the welcome address by Mr. Zaid A. Siddiqui, followed by introductory remarks by Dr. Jan Mohammad Lone highlighting the historical milieu of Indian Constitution Day.

The programme concluded with the pledge reading ceremony of the Preamble to the Constitution (both in Hindi and English).

The Faculty members, students and staff of the Department of Linguistics took the pledge on the occasion of “Samvidhan Diwas” and acknowledged the contribution of founding fathers of the Constitution. They read the Preamble to the Constitution by clicking on the link provided by the Ministry of Education, Govt. of India.

Celebrating the ‘Samvidhan Diwas’ at the Department of Botany, faculty members, research scholars and UG, PG students read the Preamble to the Constitution.

Prof Ghazala Parveen, Chairperson addressed the audience and highlighted the uniqueness of the Indian constitution and relevance of the day.

The Department of Zoology celebrated the Constitution Day where students gave a presentation on the historical background of the Indian Constitution and discussed why India is considered as the mother of Democracy.

On the occasion Prof Mohammad Afzal, Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences presented a copy of the Indian Constitution to Prof Mukhtar Ahmad Khan, Chairperson of the Department.

The Chairperson also gifted a set of books to M Sc. and B Sc. Students.

AMU schools also organized special programmes on the ‘Constitution Day’.

A special assembly by the students of 10th class A was organized at the AMU City Girls High School wherein Mehvish Javed and Humera explained the meaning and importance of the Constitution, its Preamble and significance in the annals of history.

After the assembly Dr.Md Alamgir the Principal read out the Preamble which was followed by the entire staff and students.

The students also participated in an Online Quiz on the topic ‘The Mother of Democracy’.

Yasmeen Parveen (class X) delivered a short speech on framing of the constitution, at the Ahmadi School for the Visually Challenged, while school teacher Mrs. Eram Fatima read the preamble in front of the students and the staff.

Dr Bushra Abbasi, In-charge, literary events presented a brief account of the Constitution Day.

Dr Naila Rashid (Principal) highlighted the importance of the Constitution Day.
