AMU VC: FIRs have been lodged; no innocent student will be targeted

Aligarh: Expressing deep regret on the unfortunate incidents, which took place on the intervening night of December 15 and 16, 2019 in the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) campus, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Tariq Mansoor in a video released today said that some FIRs have been lodged regarding these incidents.

He assured that the University will take up these cases and no innocent person and student will be harassed or targeted.

Prof Mansoor further assured, “As far as other grievances of students are concerned, all things will be discussed, once normalcy is restored.”

I appeal to all the students and members of the teaching staff to help us maintain normalcy and functioning of academic activities in a peaceful manner, said Prof Mansoor.

The Vice Chancellor categorically pointed out that he is remorseful of the December 15 incidents and that he has already written letters to the students and the AMU community to express that ‘he is sorry for the students, who suffered injuries’ on that fateful night.

“We have always depended on our proctorial team and on pro-proctors and members of the teaching staff to sort out any issue and we will keep depending on them in future too,” said Prof Mansoor.

He stated that as an academic institution, AMU believes in democratic functioning and all sections of the University including the teaching and non-teaching staff and students have full right to conduct peaceful protests on any provision, they find objectionable.

“Academic institutions have all the rights to argue, discuss and give dissent, if necessary,” said the Vice Chancellor.
