In the first month of classes in the new academic year, schoolchildren from the 31st educational organization of the Republic of Karelia have become participants of the Asterion program
Astronomical club “Asterion” for the ninth time opened its doors to schoolchildren wishing to expand their knowledge in the field of astronomy. This year, due to the difficult epidemiological situation, many classes are conducted online.

The club was attended by 73 students from various schools in Petrozavodsk (Petrozavodsk Presidential Cadet School, Finno-Ugric School, University Lyceum, Lyceum No. 1, Lyceum No. 13, Lyceum No. 40, Gymnasium No. 17, Lomonosov Gymnasium, Specialized School of Arts, Secondary School No. No. 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, 12, 17, 20, 33, 34, 36, 39, 42, 43, 46) and districts of the Republic of Karelia: Pryazhinsky (Chalninskaya school, Essoilskaya school), Pudozhsky (Secondary school in Avdeevo village), Kondopozhsky (secondary school No. 3 in Kondopoga), Medvezhyegorsky (Shungskaya secondary school).

Stars, galaxies and cosmology are the main topics of this school year. In the classroom, schoolchildren will learn how different the stars are; get acquainted with such exotic concepts as neutron stars and black holes; they will study how and why stars emit light, how astronomers study this radiation; will try to find an answer to the question of what is beyond our Galaxy.

In the presence of good weather and a favorable epidemiological situation during the academic year, open city astronomical observations of various celestial bodies will be organized: the Moon, planets and asteroids of the Solar System, nearby galaxies and remnants of supernova explosions.
