A group of Brock student leaders is encouraging the University community to don denim and jewelry for a good cause.

On Thursday, Feb. 16, the Brock Leaders Citizenship Society (BLCS) will host its annual Denim, Diamonds and Diplomas gala to raise bursary funds in support of DSBN Academy students, who will become the first in their families to receive a post-secondary education.

After heading online during the COVID-19 pandemic, the event will return in person at Club Roma in St. Catharines from 6 to 10 p.m. Participants are encouraged to wear their finest denim clothing and shiniest jewelry while enjoying a three-course dinner, a presentation from motivational speaker Andy Thibodeau and a raffle for a white gold pendant.

During the evening, there will also be performances from the DSBN Academy jazz band and a hybrid-format silent auction, which will allow both gala participants and those unable to attend to bid online.

Denim, Diamonds and Diplomas has raised more than $90,000 for DSBN Academy students since its inception in 2016.

BLCS member Brooke Harvey said the purpose of the event is to raise funds while also developing community partnerships.

“People come together from across all domains to support these students who have worked so hard to set themselves up for success,” said the fourth-year Brock Education student. “The event offers an opportunity for members of the community, Brock faculty and Brock students to show their support and encouragement by recognizing the effort and perseverance of DSBN Academy graduates.”

Harvey said the partnership with the local high school is a natural fit.

“While BLCS members pride themselves on academic success, leadership and community involvement, DSBN Academy students do the same,” she said. “Having received ongoing scholarships through our membership within BLCS, members recognize first-hand the impact financial assistance can have in helping navigate post-secondary education.”
