Aligarh : Experts updated the clinical knowledge of dental graduates and practitioners and pressed the need for attention to innovative research in the Continuing Dental Education (CDE) programme on ‘Aiming for Research in Dentistry and Orthodontics’ of the Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Dr Z A Dental College (ZADC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

Prof Pandurangan Harikrishnan (Head, Department of Orthodontics, SGT University, Gurgaon) highlighted that research allows dental students and practitioners to develop a deeper understanding of the biosocial underpinnings of the profession.

“The drive for new knowledge is of core value in educational institutions and private practices. Exposing trainees to the principles and practice of research fuels a sense of curiosity and is one of the primary tools for teaching critical thinking, which in turn promotes a habit of lifelong learning”, he added.

Prof Pandurangan also talked about collaborative research work in dentistry with the use of cutting-edge technologies such as SEM, EDAX, AFM and DSC.

Presiding over the programme, Prof R K Tewari (Principal, ZADC) stressed: “The evolution of dentistry is directly related to the advancements made through research and there is a need for a stronger dedication to research in today’s current education model”.

“An education colored by research is one way of achieving the intellectual rigor necessary for the professional. The key is cultivating in students a taste for complexity, for problems, and for problem solving. All dental colleges without exception need to help students acquire this taste”, said Prof Sandhya Maheshwari (Organising Chairperson).

Dr Saba Khan (Organizing Secretary) and Dr Arbab Anjum (Co-ordinator) discussed the importance of acquiring and assimilating new knowledge for changes in dental practice.

Dr Deepika R S Bais (Joint-Organizing Secretary) conducted the programme.

Meanwhile first year BDS students Faiza Marghoob, Shafana Fatima, Sumaiya Shamshad, Farheen Nishat and Laiba Fatima received prizes for winning the e-poster contest held earlier in a separate ‘Swachhta Pakhwada’ event at ZADC.
