Cochlear implant surgery performed at JNMC

ALIGARH : In a first-of-its-kind surgery at the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University, two children with hearing impairment were operated on by the doctors of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology (ENT), who performed Cochlear Implant Surgery on them under a memorandum of understanding (MoE) with the Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Speech and Hearing Disabilities (Diyyangjan), Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, New Delhi.

The two children, Fatima (3 years) and Saad (5 years) were operated on by Dr Aftab Ahmed, who was assisted by Dr Abdur Rehman and Dr Danish Ahmad Khan (SR). The surgery was performed under the mentorship of Prof. Rakesh Kumar (AIIMS, New Delhi) and anaesthesia was given by Prof. S. Moied Ahmad and his team.

Meanwhile, Prof Rakesh Kumar (Department of Otolaryngology and Head & Neck Surgery, AIIMS, New Delhi) delivered an extension lecture on the prevalence, diagnosis and management of congenital deafness.

Dr Arvind Kumar (Department of Otolaryngology and Head & Neck Surgery, AIIMS, New Delhi) discussed the practical aspects of Cochlear Implant Surgery.

Prof. S. C. Sharma (Former Chairman, Department of ENT, AMU) discussed the journey of starting the Cochlear Implant Program at J. N. Medical College and congratulated the team of doctors for successfully performing the surgery.

Prof. Veena Maheshwari (Dean, Faculty of Medicine) congratulated the ENT department for starting the program and becoming the fourth Government Centre in Uttar Pradesh for successfully executing this program.

Prof. Rakesh Bhargava (Principal and CMS, JNMC) expressed concern about the increasing prevalence of deafness in society and emphasized hearing preservation methods as it has a vital role in the life cycle of every individual.

The Chairman Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Prof. Mohammad Aftab discussed the common occurrence of congenital deafness and the need for its early detection with a better understanding of this condition by patients and healthcare providers.
