Aligarh: A 25-year-old Covid positive mother delivered a baby boy weighing 2.3 kg at the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). His birth spread cheer in the hospital as it was the fifth baby with a coronavirus positive mother delivered at the hospital.
None of the babies has contracted the virus so far, said Prof Tamkin Khan (Chairperson, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology). The woman was initially admitted at the Deen Dayal Upadhay Hospital in Aligarh, but was later referred to JNMC under Prof Tamkin after testing positive for Covid19.
“The fifth healthy delivery of a Covid positive mother at JNMC is a milestone. In the midst of this pandemic, pregnant women are going through a lot of turmoil. I would like to congratulate the JNMC staff for handling the delivery cases of Covid positive pregnant women,” said AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor.
He further added that JNMC is catering to Covid Positive women not only from Aligarh, but also from the adjoining places.
Prof Tamkin added that the baby boy was delivered through a Cesarian Section by a team comprising Dr Enas Mushtaq, Dr Zulqarnain, Dr Shams and Dr Azeem in a separate building and an operation theatre designated for Covid positive patients at JNMC. There is a separate operation theatre and ward for general Obstetrics and Gynaecology cases at JNMC.
“The infant’s Covid test result came out negative, as the mother is undergoing treatment at the Covid ward in the hospital,” said Prof Tamkin.
She added that utmost care is taken at every step, such as wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) during the delivery and disinfecting areas after every delivery, while also keeping the mothers and babies together.
