Gannon University hosts annual Celebrate Gannon, series of weekend events
Gannon University is hosting its annual Celebrate Gannon to showcase the scholarly and creative work of students Friday, April 21 at its Erie, Pa. and Ruskin, Fla. Campuses.
Celebrate Gannon is an annual event that celebrates the culmination of a year’s worth of scholarship, research, engagement and fine art collaborations between students, faculty and staff. The students’ work will be on display in the Highmark Events Center and Ruskin Academic Building for the Gannon and surrounding communities to engage with the student presenters, some of whom will be giving their first professional presentation.
Every project is the result of students mentoring with faculty and staff on projects that evolve from coursework, independent research projects and student service projects.
“I am truly impressed by the level of presentations submitted for this year’s event,” said Walter Iwanenko, Ph.D., provost and vice president of student experience. “Our students are committed to finding ways to truly live out our Mission to go out into our community and the world – transformed – as socially responsible, faith-filled citizens.
From important research on diseases such as Alzheimer’s, to studying the effects of peer mentorship on veterans or the effects of exercise on the quality of life of individuals with disabilities, to the review of interventions provided to patients in the fields of occupational therapy and speech-language pathology.”
Gannon University is excited to host several additional events this week including:
46th Annual Writing Awards Night at 7:30 p.m. on April 20 in Yehl Ballroom. Ilya Kaminsky and Katie Farris will be the distinguished guest poets and will be reading featured selections from their award-winning poetry. Students from all three of the University’s colleges will be honored for their achievements in writing poetry, journalism, and research. In addition, winners of Gannon’s annual nationwide high school poetry contest will be recognized.
Day of Giving on April 20 and 21, this two-day event is an opportunity for members of the Gannon and surrounding communities to make a gift to an area that means the most to them. Day of Caring April 22, during which students and employees answer the call for service at an array of locations in both Erie and Ruskin. This event, held on Earth Day, is an annual tradition through which members of the university give back to the community through acts of service such as debris clean-up, maintenance, neighborhood engagement and more.
One service project during Day of Caring will bring Gannon and the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy together to plant trees at Bayview park on W. Second Street.
