BUDGAM: The Department of Sociology at Government Degree College (GDC) Khansahib today organised a one-day seminar on ‘Revisiting & Reviving Kashmiri Culture’, here.

The seminar started with a beautiful Kashmiri song “Kral Koori…..” sung by college students in appreciation of the chief guest Saima Shafi, famously known as ‘ Kral Koor’ (potter girl) of Kashmir; she is also a civil engineer in the Public Works Depart of Jammu & Kashmir.

Thereafter, Principal of the institution, Dr. Nargis Bano presented a memento to her and gave a formal welcome address.

In her speech, Saima Shafi laid emphasis on preservation of Kashmiri culture & heritage. She said that she was perturbed by the neglect of Kashmiri pottery in the cultural discourse of Kashmir and it is due to this reason that she plunged into this field to help restore this important craft of Kashmir.

She said her interest in art was there from the very beginning and her aim has been to revive pottery in Kashmir within the next 10 years and make it a profitable business.

Saima said that people engaged in this art should make a decent living.

A practical session was also conducted wherein ‘Kral Koor’ and other artists crafted different pottery items. Some students also took part in the practice session.
