GDC Khansahib organises seminar on ‘Role of Women in Indian Freedom Movement & Nation Building Process’

 

BUDGAM: The Department of History, Govt. Degree College Khansahib (Budgam) today organised a one day seminar on the theme “Role of Women in Indian Freedom Struggle & Nation Building Process”, here.

Prof. Gull Mohammad Wani, HoD of Political Science at the University of Kashmir was invited as the key resource person.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Wani examined the role of women in the national movement for freedom particularly during and after the first war of independence (1857-58). He talked about unsung heroines like AbadiBano Begum, Begum Hazrat Mahal, Rani Laxmibai, Capt. Laxmi Sehgal & others.

He further said that the constitution of India made a remarkable break from the past and ensured equality in terms of political, economic, social and legal.

He said there are still many barriers in the development and upliftment of women and there should be asset redistribution in favour of women, political representation, ensuring their proper place in decision making at all levels and making them equal stakeholders in peace making and peace building process.

Earlier, the welcome address was presented by Dr. Syed Tanvir Indrabi, Principal GDC Khansahib. Apart from welcoming the guest, faculty members and students present in the audience, he laid emphasis on treating women with dignity and ensuring their equality and freedom in the nation-building process.

The event was moderated by Prof. Iqbal Shafi, while Dr. SajadPadder presented the vote of thanks.
