GMHSS Sawjian hosts seminar, painting competition on World Earth Day
POONCH : Government Model Higher Secondary School Sawjian, Poonch, today organised a Seminar and Painting Competition on world Earth day.
The students were made aware about clean and green environment and encouraged to take part in activities like planting trees and keeping the surroundings clean.
While addressing the students, Arif Malik, Lecturer in Geography informed the students that the day was first celebrated on April 22, 1970, as a day of environment preservation in the US and the objectives of environmental conservation are now being pursued around the global.
Moderator of the program, Salim Rishi informed the audience that this was first started when peace activist John Mc Connell proposed to honour the planet and the concept of peace during a UNESCO conference in San Francisco.
“The day also reminds us how fragile our planet is and how it is important to save it from the global climate crisis that is worsening with each passing day” he said.
While addressing the gathering, Principal Model Higher Secondary School Sawjian Anwar Khan said that the theme of Earth Day 2022 is to ‘Invest in our planet’, urging businesses to shift towards sustainable practices. He also stressed upon the students to avoid using single use Plastic and avoid littering around.
