Organisers have confirmed that, after careful consideration, the awards will be going ahead – with the awards ceremony being held in Birmingham on Thursday.

Harper Adams is shortlisted in the Training Scheme of the Year category for its Animal Welfare and Meat Processing course, which is designed for industry professionals working in the sector – from the farm to the supermarket shelf.

Senior Lecturer in Livestock Health and Welfare, Dr Karim Farag, said: “Finding out we were shortlisted was very exciting – and we weren’t expecting it, so it reflects the hard work invested by everyone involved in the delivery of the course.

“The course has been attended by people of various professional backgrounds – we have had vets, technical staff, and agriculture supply managers from the poultry, beef, lamb and pig industry!”

The short course, which is held at the University twice a year, covers all aspects of meat production, with its attendees examining best practice across the supply chain, including animal welfare, slaughterhouse operations, carcass handling and butchery, aw well as maturation and secondary processing.

Considering welfare, legislation, industry codes of practice and customer requirements, the course aims to help ensure its participants understand the key factors behind the production of high quality and safe products.

Dr Farag added: “Our course is delivered in such a way that people working throughout the supply chain will find it useful, and as a result, we have had some interesting conversations.

“Many different parts of the industry are all in one room, which opens the sessions up to new viewpoints and discussions – this results in a better understanding and more appreciation of the complexity of the whole supply chain of the different meat industries.”

Dr Farag and his colleague, Dr Lynn McIntyre, will be representing Harper Adams at this week’s awards, which will be held at Birmingham’s Hilton Metropole.

The awards are designed to recognise excellence across the UK’s meat sector, with producers, suppliers, retailers and organisations of all kinds among their nominees.
