HKU launches two new programmes to offer more opportunities to the graduating class of 2020
The President of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) Professor Xiang Zhang announced the launch of two new programmes, the “HKU TPG Scholarship for UG Class of 2020” and “HKU Internship Programme” for undergraduate students of the 2020 graduating class, to recruit and nurture aspiring graduates in pursuit of further education or a chance to gain experience in the workplace.
“The world has changed in ways that none of us could have imagined. While everyone is struggling to find new alternatives and solutions, we are also re-doubling our efforts to empower our students to achieve their full potential. We are happy to announce two new programmes to offer more opportunities and choices for our fresh graduates going forward,” said Professor Zhang.
The HKU TPG Scholarship will fund undergraduate students who wish to pursue their studies further at an unconventional time when the global economic outlook is unstable. Around 500 out of 4,500 undergraduate students in the 2020 graduating class will have the chance to benefit from this scholarship, totalling HK$40 million, offered in 49 programmes ranging across nine faculties, including Architecture, Arts, Business & Economics, Education, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Science and Social Sciences.
Undergraduate students who meet the programme admission criteria can apply to study any one of the 49 taught postgraduate programmes on the list for the academic year 2020-21, and will be awarded a scholarship of a value equivalent to 50% of the tuition fees of the programme.
“As Asia’s global university, we hope to open up more opportunities for students to pursue further education and gain more learning experience at this difficult time, so that they will be better equipped to make a positive impact on society as they tackle grand challenges ahead,” said Professor Ian Holliday, Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Teaching and Learning) at HKU.
Alternatively, HKU fresh graduates who wish to gain experience in the workplace can apply to take part in the Internship Programme, which lasts for four months and has a quota of 50. Successful applicants can gain on-the-job experience and understanding of University operations while contributing to their alma mater. The programme will commence in August 2020. The University is also considering other initiatives and will announce the details in due course.
