International conference on Mutagenesis inaugurated

ALIGARH  : The three-day 45th International Conference of Environmental Mutagen Society of India organized by the Department of Zoology, Aligarh Muslim University on “Environmental Mutagenesis and Toxicogenomics: Human Health Perspectives” began here today. The conference also includes a “Workshop on Genotoxicity Assays” for undergraduate and postgraduate students.

In his presidential remarks, AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Tariq Mansoor highlighted the impact of environmental pollution and adulterated food on human health in the form of mutagenesis, carcinogenesis, etc. He said the only way to reduce mutagenesis is to control the pollution level.

He highlighted the importance of research in mutagenesis to improve human health by developing better treatment and medicines.

The Chief Guest, Prof Helga Stopper (University Wurzburg, Germany) said the conference will cover many emerging topics related to Mutagenesis and hoped that discussions at the conference help experts in this field come up with some concrete results in reducing mutagenesis.

The guest of honor, Prof Siegfried Knasmueller (Centre for Cancer Research, Wien, Austria) said he is impressed by the way and standard with which conferences are organized in India. He said he is impressed by the rich cultural heritage of this country.

Prof. Mohammad Afzal (Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences) highlighted the academic achievements of faculty members of the department of Zoology and its alumni.

Prof. KB Sainis (President, EMSI) stressed the importance of mutation research for development of personalized medicine. He said he is happy to visit AMU and impressed by its pristine environment.

Prof. Birajalaxmi Das (Secretary, EMSI) spoke on the history and significance of the EMSI and underscored the main features of the conference.

Earlier, welcoming the guests, Prof. Mukhtar A Khan (Chairperson, Department of Zoology) said the conference will provide a framework to the scientists and researchers in understanding the impact of environmental health and improving personalized medicine.

He said that oral and poster presentation awards will also be given to the participants which has been sponsored by Mutation Research (Elsevier) with the allocation of USD 750 for this purpose.
