Kerala’s First Advanced Centre for Neuro Endoscopy Surgeries inaugurated at Amrita Hospital, Kochi

Kochi  – Amrita Hospital, Kochi, a premier hospital in South Asia, has launched Kerala’s first Centre for Neuro Endoscopy, known as the Amrita Centre for Neuro Endoscopy (ACNE) for patients suffering from neurological and neurosurgical conditions.

The centre brings together a dedicated team of experts from various specialties, including skull base endoscopy, cranial endoscopy, spine endoscopy, robotic endoscopy, and paediatric endoscopy, to provide comprehensive care in the field of endoscopic neurosurgery. The centre’s specialization within each division ensures highly targeted and effective treatments, promising the best possible outcomes for patients.

During the inauguration of the Amrita Centre for Neuro Endoscopy (ACNE), held recently, Dr. Prem Nair, Group Medical Director of Amrita Hospitals, said, “The Advanced Neuro Endoscopy Centre at Amrita Hospital Kochi signifies a significant advancement in minimally invasive neurosurgery, underscoring our unwavering dedication to providing top-tier healthcare not only to Kerala but also to a broader audience. Our pioneering efforts in robotic endoscopy in Southeast Asia, with over 250 successful cranial endoscopic procedures, have set a benchmark for exceptional neurosurgical care.”

The establishment of the Amrita Centre for Neuro Endoscopy (ACNE) marks a significant milestone in healthcare. It is the first Neuro-Endoscopy Centre in Kerala to provide comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services and aims to become a leading source for these services.

The benefits of Advanced Neuro Endoscopy are multifaceted, as highlighted by Dr. Sajesh K Menon, Head of Neurosurgery at Amrita Hospital, Kochi who says, “Diseases that once necessitated extensive skull openings can now be effectively managed through minimally invasive procedures, and the same holds true for spinal disorders. These procedures entail smaller incisions, resulting in swifter recoveries. Patients undergoing these treatments experience reduced infection risks and enhanced safety. A significant number can now leave the hospital on the same day as their surgery, reducing hospitalization duration and associated costs. These innovative techniques offer cost-effective solutions for individuals in need of advanced medical care.”

Dr. Suhas Udayakumaran, a Pediatric Neurosurgeon at Amrita Hospital, Kochi, highlights that endoscopy offers substantial benefits for paediatric brain issuesHe explains, “It provides a less traumatic, minimally invasive approach that reduces recovery time and achieves outcomes comparable to traditional open procedures. This transformational technique can significantly enhance a child’s quality of life, alleviating suffering, mitigating long-term risks, and ultimately improving their overall performance.”

The hospital aims to revolutionize deformative surgery by introducing advanced neuro endoscopy techniques, providing patients with improved, less invasive treatment options. This approach enhances patient outcomes, accelerates recovery, and minimizes risks, elevating specialized medical care.

The collaboration between the Department of Neurosurgery, ENT, and Head and Neck Department has set an exemplary standard of care for brain and head and neck disorders treated through endoscopy. Amrita Hospital in Kochi is one of the few hospitals in India that has established a dedicated centre for Neuro and Endoscopy surgeries.
