Launched this year by King’s Entrepreneurship Institute (EI), the Entrepreneurial Engagement Fund gives King’s student groups and student societies the opportunity to apply for up to £2,000 funding to help them launch their ideas and put plans into action relevant to entrepreneurial skills.

Following application, shortlisted teams were invited to pitch their ideas to the EI to demonstrate how their projects could increase their society membership, whilst deepening engagement with the EI and upskilling their members.

King’s Biotechnology and Synthetic Biology Society
Project: Hackathon: Simulation of the iGEM bio start-up competition where students will work in groups to address one of the UN’s sustainability goals, whilst offering networking opportunities to participants to widen participation. Project will run until end of March 2023.

We felt the obligation to present everyone at King’s with the opportunity to participate in a competition that exposes students to the field of entrepreneurship within the life sciences and beyond. We strongly believe that our hackathon will not only help spread the word of iGEM to different faculties around King’s but will also allow us to establish the focus of the society around entrepreneurship through our partnership with the King’s Entrepreneurship Institute.”

King’s Entrepreneurs and King’s Film Society
Project: Hackathon: Skill share programme and pitch competition to master the digital pitch, culminating in a film festival. Project will run until October 2022.

We chose to apply for the King’s Entrepreneurial Engagement Fund because we believe there’s an opportunity to harness KCL’s hidden entrepreneurs. We chose King’s Film Society as a partner because in a world of Zoom and Loom pitches, creativity is a critical aspect of entrepreneurship. The funding for a video pitch competition will allow participants to build an entrepreneurial mindset, whilst exploring their creative side, disrupting the landscape in a way that’s never been tried before.”

Through this opportunity we believe that both members from both fields will share and learn from one another in a creative and challenging manner. We’ll hold an event with a society that we wouldn’t have formerly collaborated with and have the chance to share our knowledge with King’s Entrepreneurs; allowing our members to further understand the importance of business in film, especially in fields such as producing.”

King’s Players
Project: Theatre Lab: An entrepreneurial accelerator for upcoming producers and directors culminating in stage shows. Project will run until July 2023.

We see the entrepreneurial spirit in action every day at the King’s Players. From casting to curtain call, our members aim to innovate and disrupt through performance. Our partnership with the EI will allow us to connect our members with the tools they need to succeed as creative entrepreneurs. Receiving this funding from the EI has allowed us to launch the King’s Theatre Lab, an innovative incubation programme to expand access to creative entrepreneurship through practical training sessions and support in putting this training into practice through independent projects. Supporting our members this way is essential to our mission of making Players a space to nurture and develop the creatives of tomorrow.”
