Professor Yoo Seung-hyun of the School of Art & Design at Korea University and his student teams were honored with three main awards at two world-renowned design awards ceremonies—the 2022 International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) and the 2022 Red Dot Design Award, the latter in the category of Brands & Communication Design.

“FLUX” by a team of Korea University students comprised of Lee Seung-jae and Kim Tae-kyung won a high profile award at IDEA, hosted by the American Association of Industrial Designers. This team devised a design that combines hardware and mobile software, based on psychological and medical research, for a system that allows office workers to maintain a correct sitting posture.

Another IDEA award winner, ‘OPUS’ by Lee Jun-taek, Koo Soon-mo, and Lee Deun, is a UX design that combines a dedicated mobile application and a smart desk system which can be customized to suit different learning and work requirements by assembling and arranging modular desk blocks in various ways.

“HAUB” by Jang Tae-woong, Kim Ji-woo, and Kim Ji-yoon, a winner of a Red Dot Award, is a wall pad UX for smart homes. This team received high marks from the judges for their screen UI design, as well as the variable graphics that harmonize interior space and intuitive UX design naturally.

Professor Yoo said, “The fact that the students implemented new convergence UX design through the combination of user-oriented design research, creativity, and user needs seems to have been well received at the global design awards in the US and Europe. I will continue to strive to contribute to Korea University’s unique UX design education program, which aims to achieve both consumer convenience and aesthetic goals.”

The IDEA, Red Dot, and IF Design Awards are considered the world’s three major sets of design award. In 2022, more than 9,000 teams from over 60 countries competed fiercely for awards from each of these organizations. Korea University’s School of Art & Design has been winning awards in world-renowned design competitions every year since 2014, and as a result is receiving international acclaim and attention.
